Shopify

Why: Shopify checks VAT numbers for tax, but it does not tell you which company is behind a number, does not know Dutch KvK numbers, and does not help Belgian or Dutch buyers fill in their company address.

All plans

  • A block in the cart where business buyers enter their VAT number (and KvK number). We check the format first, then VIES, and show the registered name and address.
  • A “Company & VAT” block in the customer account, where buyers save their number once and can use the registered address as their default address.
  • A checkout rule that blocks VAT numbers you choose to reject, and can require a VAT number for B2B-only shops. It also runs on express checkouts.
  • After every order we check VAT, KvK and the NL/BE shipping address again and add tags (for example codesaur-autofill-vat-valid), a metafield with the proof (date, VIES request id) and a risk assessment with plain reasons.
  • Optional: exempt customers with a valid VAT number from another EU country from VAT (reverse charge).

Shopify Plus (Plus checkout plan)

  • A “Company details” block right after the delivery address: VAT and KvK fields that fill in the empty address fields and ask “Registered as X: use this?” before changing anything the buyer typed.
  • An address autocomplete provider: Dutch postcode + house number (PDOK) and Belgian postcode + street (BeST), in Shopify’s own address field.

Outage-safe: VIES is often slow or down. We never strand a buyer: the number is kept, the order goes through, and we check again after the order.

KvK: the KvK does not allow a shared key. Test mode is free on every plan; live lookups use your own KVK API subscription (about €6.20 per month at the KvK in October 2026) on the Company Check + KvK or Plus checkout plan.

Plan Price What
Free €0 50 checks per month, all storefront surfaces, post-order checks, KvK test environment
Company Check €4.95/month no monthly limit
Company Check + KvK €7.95/month adds live KvK lookups with your own KvK API key
Plus checkout €14.95/month adds the checkout block and address autocomplete (needs Shopify Plus); KvK included

Every paid plan starts with a 30-day free trial. Change or cancel the plan in the app at any time; no support needed.

  1. Install VAT & Company Autofill from the Shopify App Store and choose a plan. Paid plans start with a 30-day free trial; the Free plan includes 50 checks per month.
  2. Add the VAT & Company Autofill block to your cart template: Online Store → Themes → Customize → Cart.
  3. Switch on the checkout rule under Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules (“NL/BE VAT number check”). If you sell B2B only, also turn on “Require a VAT number” in the app.
  4. Shopify Plus with the Plus checkout plan: add the Company details block in the checkout editor (after the delivery address), and choose “NL/BE address autocomplete” under Settings → Checkout → Address autocompletion.
  5. Open the app in your Shopify admin to set the options and to see the dashboard below.

Uninstalling removes the app; everything of your shop is deleted from our server 48 hours later.

The hosted app’s settings live in one dashboard on our server, the same for every hosted platform. You open it from your shop admin, or sign in with a link by e-mail. Its pages:

  • Overview: Everything at a glance: are the checks working, and what does KvK cost you this month?
  • Settings: Works out of the box with VIES, PDOK and BeST. Change only what you need.
  • KvK: Let Dutch business customers fill in their company from their KvK number.
  • Lookup log: Each lookup from your storefront, newest first. Inputs are masked. Entries are deleted after {days} days (Settings).
  • Your data: What we keep for your shop, and how to take it with you or delete it (GDPR).

How to get your own KvK API key (step by step)

Section titled “How to get your own KvK API key (step by step)”

KvK lookups use your own key (“bring your own key”). The KvK does not allow a shared key, and your data stays between your shop and the KvK. Want to try first? Choose test mode: it uses the KvK test environment with fictional companies (for example KvK number 68750110) and costs nothing.

  1. Where: order the “KVK API” on kvk.nl (Ordering products → KVK API) as a company, with your own KvK number. Take the Zoeken API, plus the profile APIs if you want the full address. KvK may charge a separate subscription per API.
  2. Cost: in October 2026 the KvK charged €6.20 per month per subscription (check kvk.nl for the current price). Looking up a number (Zoeken) is free. Only “Fetch the full address” costs €0.02 per lookup; the overview page shows your calls per month.
  3. Paste: when the KvK has sent you the key, paste it into “KvK API key” above, save it, and set “KvK lookup” to “Live, with my own API key”.
  4. Test: on the overview page, click “Test KvK (Dutch Chamber of Commerce)”.
  5. Done: the KvK number field now appears in your checkout for Dutch business customers.

Your key is stored encrypted on our server and never sent to a browser. KvK results are cached only for your shop, never shared with other shops.

We read orders and customers to check the VAT number, KvK number and shipping address after an order, and write tags, metafields, a risk assessment and (only if you switch it on) a tax exemption. Only the number or the postcode and house number is sent to the public registers (VIES, PDOK, BeST, KvK). We keep no customer profiles: the lookup log is masked and deleted after 30 days, and everything of your shop is deleted 48 hours after you uninstall. Servers in the EU. Privacy policy and data processing agreement: [link from lookup-api step 12].

We support the app, not your theme or other apps. Need help? Open the app, go to Support and click Copy diagnostics, then paste the text into a mail to support@codesaur.nl. It shows the app version, your plan, the health of each register and the last failed lookups (masked); it never contains a key, an access token or a full customer number.

  • No VAT field in the cart: add the “VAT & Company Autofill” block to your cart template in the theme editor (Online Store → Themes → Customize → Cart). Themes without app block support in the cart drawer show it on the cart page only.
  • “Could not be checked” for a VAT number: VIES or the national register is busy. The buyer can continue; the order is checked again after it is placed and tagged codesaur-autofill-vat-unverifiable if it still cannot be confirmed.
  • The checkout rule does nothing: switch it on under Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules (“NL/BE VAT number check”), and “Require a VAT number” in the app if you sell B2B only.
  • Plus checkout block or address suggestions missing: they need Shopify Plus and our Plus checkout plan. Add the block in the checkout editor (after the delivery address) and choose “NL/BE address autocomplete” under Settings → Checkout → Address autocompletion.
  • Lookups stopped mid-month on the Free plan: the 50 free checks are used up; they reset on the 1st, or choose a paid plan (no monthly limit).
  • No KvK field: KvK is off in the settings dashboard, or live KvK needs the Company Check + KvK plan and your own KvK API key.

No. VIES, PDOK and BeST are free public services. Only the KvK lookup needs your own KvK API key; the KvK test environment works without one.

The Netherlands and Belgium: VAT check with company autofill, Dutch postcode + house number lookup and Belgian street suggestions. The VAT check itself works for every EU VAT number.

The customer can continue. The order and the customer are marked “could not be checked”, and you see it on the order, on the customer and in the lookup log.

Only if you switch on the VAT exemption (reverse charge) for valid intra-EU business customers. It is off by default. You decide the VAT treatment of your sales.

Not for the plugins you install on your own server (Shopware, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop): they talk directly to the public services. The hosted apps (Shopify, Lightspeed) run on our server in the EU, as your processor. See external services and the privacy policy.
